Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 1 at Sangchris Lake State Park for The Office of Land Management. This position will provide guidance and training to staff, perform groundskeeping and landscaping duties, plow and shovel snow, patch roads, make minor repairs to plumbing, heating, and air conditioning equipment, and will participate in the preparation of the annual operating budget and annual Plan of Work. Located minutes southeast of Springfield, Sangchris Lake State Park serves as a perfect home-base for enjoying outdoor activities including fishing, boating, camping, hunting, picnics and family gatherings amid native forests of oak, maple, butternut and persimmon. Essential Functions

• Under general supervision of the Site Superintendent at Sangchris Lake, supervises and participates in site maintenance activities such as building repairs, vehicle and equipment maintenance, minor construction.
• Serves as working supervisor.
• Assumes full responsibility of operations and planning during the Site Superintendent’s absence.
• Participates and supervises the activities of the subordinate staff engaged in inspecting site and satellites for safety hazards such as flooding, downed trees, malfunctioning maintenance equipment, damaged day use equipment, and facilities.
• Monitors and directs site staff in organizing and running outdoor recreational programs including camping, Natural Resource programs like hunting, camping, fishing, equestrian riding, and wildlife observation.
• Evaluates and reports to Site Superintendent on problems or quality of work vendors, contractors, employees, volunteers, concessionaires, and other interest groups.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration and one year’s related functional supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1) year of working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and fiscal management.
• Two (2) years of experience in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of the duties and responsibilities.
• One (1) year of experience assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees.

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

  Work Hours: April - October: Tues-Thurs (7am-3pm), Friday (12pm-8pm) & Saturday (7am-3pm); Nov-March: Monday-Friday (7am-3pm); All schedules include 1/2 hour lunch
