Department Information



Distribution and Logistical Services is a group of campus auxiliary operations that provides essential services to students, faculty, and staff in support of the university's academic mission on the Bloomington campus. We use innovative and sustainable business practices to provide excellent customer service, convenience, and value to the entire university community. Distribution and Logistical Services encompasses Printing Services, Campus Mail, Warehouse, and Surplus. This position is within Printing Services.

Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Operates various bindery equipment
  • Operates a Presstek DI 52 Digital Offset Press. Operating the DI press includes reading and interpreting detailed job ticket specs, loading the job through the computer interface, confirming imposition, burning plates, stock set up, loading and adjustment, press make-ready, properly setting all mechanical and chemical adjustments to ensure highest quality results, and monitoring quality throughout production run and adjusting as necessary.
  • Maintains the Presstek DI 52 Press, including cleaning and maintenance, roller setting, job system maintenance, and minor repairs.
  • Produces high quality finished jobs utilizing a full range of bindery equipment (e.g., programmable cutters, multi-pocket saddle stitcher, folders, creasers, drills, perfect binder, coil binders, and other bindery and finishing equipment).
  • Reads detailed delivery instructions, and packages proofs and finished orders for courier deliveries or shipments.
  • Performs other related production or bindery hand work operations as assigned.

General Responsibilities

  • Reads and interprets job orders to determine production run parameters, stock specifications, colors, quantities, etc.
  • Mixes and prepares various ink colors from industry standard color guide. Sets up and adjusts all mechanical, electronic, and chemical settings, speed, ink flow, pressures, etc.
  • Loads, positions, and adjusts stock on holding fixtures or in equipment loading and feeding mechanisms. Monitors quality of printed product throughout production run to maintain acceptable standards; performs fine adjustments to ink densities, roller, and pressure settings or dampening systems.
  • Maintains presses and printing equipment; performs daily cleanings and maintenance and performs minor repairs.
  • Operates bindery equipment to include programmable cutters, saddle stitchers, folders, etc., to produce finished publications.
  • May help train other operators or assist in other production areas as needed.

Qualifications



EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 6 years of experience operating offset presses, including those larger than 14 X 20 sheet size

Preferred

  • Experience with related bindery equipment required to produce quality finished products

SKILLS

Required

  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to operate and maintain complex mechanical offset presses of different sizes
  • Ability to interpret work orders and set up machinery accordingly
  • Knowledge of printing and bindery processes
  • Ability to operate a personal computer

Preferred

  • Ability to use bindery equipment
  • Ability to perform general shop maintenance
  • Knowledge of printing and bindery processes

Working Conditions / Demands



This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 70 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodations.

Up to $51,500 annually, based on experience
