Summary

Under direct supervision this position is accountable to the bedside RN and charge nurse to facilitate a safe and secure environment for the patient, family and providers in the department in completion of the duties delegated to them for the shift and maintaining clear communication between the needs of the patient through the RN and Charge Nurse. These activities focus on maintaining a safe, hazard free, clean environment which facilitates patient focused care.

Responsibilities

Observes patients experiencing suicidal ideation, behavioral health issues, or other safety concerns to ensure safety and stability. Recognizes abnormal behavior or changes in behavior and notifies primary RN. Records and reports all information within scope of knowledge. Conducts regular environmental assessments with the primary nurse to ensure the environment is free of objects, equipment, medications, etc. that a patient may use to harm themselves. Must be able to work in situations with isolation precautions. Maintains cleanliness and safety of a variety of equipment; reports any hazardous equipment and seeks repairs when necessary; maintains confidentiality in regard to patient care information and chart contents. Assist in infection control including using standard precautions and isolation precautions as appropriate. Collaborates with personnel in nursing and supportive services and with members of the health care team to promote respect in delivery of patient care. Maintain the daily care of a patient or group of patients; monitor bodily functions; taking and recording vital signs; transporting patients; non-invasive collection and testing of physical specimens; measuring and recording fluid and food intake and output; obtain blood glucose levels, place electrodes and leads for electrocardiogram, cardiac monitoring, and telemetry and personal care tasks such as bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, toileting, assisting with eating, hydrating, and skin care. Recognizes abnormal signs and symptoms including shortness of breath, rapid respiration, fever, chills, cough, chest or abdomen pain, blue color to the lips, drowsiness, and excessive thirst or sweating. Reports changes in body function and abnormal signs and symptoms to RN. Adheres to established safety, emergency, and disaster procedures. Change simple, nonsterile dressings using aseptic technique when no wound debridement or packing is involved; assist patients with self-medication;; suction of the oral pharynx; provide tracheostomy care in established, stable patients; remove internal or external urinary catheters; add fluid to established gastrostomy tube feedings and changing established tube feeding bags. Performs clerical duties. Answers the phones, completes requisitions, schedules tests and appointments, scans and files reports, orders supplies, requests equipment repairs, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

C ertificate of completion from a state-accredited Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program, transcript showing successful completion of an accredited nursing program’s Foundations of Nursing course or completion of ANMC specific Patient Care Technician Training Program.

mInimum Experience Qualification

P atient Care Technician I

Non-supervisory – None.

P atient Care Technician II

Non-supervisory - Two (2) year of patient care experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

P atient Care Technician III

Non-supervisory – Four (4) years’ of patient care experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

C ertification in Basic Life Support required.

M ust complete Crisis Prevention Intervention training and Suicide Observation training within sixty (60) days of hire.
