The Human Factors Engineer Lead plays a pivotal role in ensuring the usability, safety, and effectiveness of the Cepheid product portfolio. They seamlessly integrate human factors and user-centric design principles into all aspects of their work, guaranteeing team success and ultimate customer satisfaction. With expertise in human factors, customer experience, and exceptional leadership, this role drives the success of the Human Factors Engineering & Design Team. This position is part of the Human Factors Engineering & Design department located in Sunnyvale, California. This role will report to the Senior Director of Human Factors Engineering & Design. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: + Champion User-Centered Design: Act as a strong advocate for end-users by representing the Human Factors function across internal teams and external stakeholders, ensuring usability is central to product development. + Drive Strategic Integration: Lead the integration of Human Factors Engineering into project planning, budgeting, and decision-making processes to support Cepheid's assay portfolio and market expansion. + Lead High-Impact Projects: Own and manage multiple Usability Engineering Files and high-priority assay projects, demonstrating strong leadership and project management capabilities. + Translate Insights into Innovation: Collaborate closely with design and cross-functional teams to synthesize usability research and customer insights into intuitive product designs and user instructions. + Ensure Execution and Accountability: Lead internal resources to deliver on usability milestones and maintain accountability for team outcomes and deliverables. The essential requirements of the job include: + Educational Background & ExperienceBachelor's degree with 8+ years, Master's with 6+ years, or Doctorate with 4+ years of relevant experience in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, or User Experience. A Master's degree is strongly preferred, especially with a focus on medical devices or diagnostics. + Human Factors & Risk Analysis ExpertiseProven expertise in conducting task analyses, use error evaluations, and integrating findings into risk management processes per ISO 14971. Experience leading formative and summative usability studies in regulated environments is essential. + Regulatory Knowledge & Submission ExperienceDeep understanding of FDA and international regulatory requirements (e.g., IEC 62366, FDA HF Guidance) for usability in medical device submissions. Must have contributed to or led successful submissions with documented usability engineering files. + Communication, Documentation & PortfolioExceptional analytical and communication skills, with the ability to clearly document usability findings and translate them into actionable design recommendations. A portfolio showcasing past work, including usability study reports and design influence, is expected. + Cross-Functional Leadership & AdvocacyDemonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders across R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, Quality, and Marketing. Must be capable of championing user-centered design principles across a large and diverse product portfolio in a fast-paced development environment. It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in: + IVDR Regulation and Usability Standards outside of the US. + Managing and mentoring dotted line associates. + Product Design and UX design skills such as Figma, Adobe suite, etc. + Experience with the Danaher Business System (DBS), including Customer Insight (CI). Travel: + Travel ability is required (domestic and international), expectations for this role are ~20%. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
