Job Description

Summary

As a daycare cook, you are responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious and appealing meals and snacks for children in a daycare setting. Also, you will be maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. You will interact with children, modeling proper food handling and eating habits. 

Duties

Meal Preparation and Service:

• This includes creating weekly menus, adapting recipes to suit children's needs and dietary restrictions, and ensuring meals are nutritious and appealing. 

• Daycare cooks often prepare a variety of snacks throughout the day. 

• This involves accurately portioning food, serving it at appropriate temperatures, and delivering it to classrooms or dining areas. 

• This includes adhering to food safety guidelines, storing food properly, and preventing contamination. 

Kitchen Management and Sanitation:

• Maintaining a clean kitchen:
• This includes daily cleaning of equipment, surfaces, and utensils, as well as maintaining inventory and ordering supplies. 
• Following health and safety regulations:
• This includes adhering to food safety standards, ensuring proper storage of food, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. 
• Maintaining records:
• This may include keeping records of food orders, menu plans, and serving records. 

Other Potential Duties:

• Daycare cooks may need to prepare special meals or snacks for children with allergies, intolerances, or other dietary restrictions. 

• In some settings, daycare cooks may be responsible for supervising and assigning tasks to kitchen helpers. 

• Daycare cooks may interact with children during meal times and model appropriate food handling and eating etiquette. 

Requirements

To work as a daycare cook, you will need a high school diploma or equivalent, food handling certification, and some experience in food preparation or cooking. Additionally, you should be at least 18 years old, pass a background check, and be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
